Steve Jobs, one of the world’s leading innovators, said it best, hire the best people. Recent studies have shown that two out of four new hires turn out to be a bad fit after the first year. There are many benefits to ministries, both large and small, in hiring the best or right person for the job. But how do you do that? We hope to provide you with a few ideas about what an effective hiring process should look like.  But first, here are a few benefits of hiring the best person.

How to Hire the Best People for Your Company

Prepare – Have a clear idea of what you need, including skills needed. Have a written job description.

Search Process – Don’t only rely on internet companies for a pool of candidates. You may actually save money in the long run by using a recruiter. Ask vendors for references, or even ask current employees for recommendations. One of the benefits of being involved in industry associations is the connections you make with others in your industry.

Interview – The interview should include a series of open ended questions. Here are some good examples. Ask situation and behavior based questions that relate directly to the job in question. Have the candidate interview with more than one manager or staff person. You may also want to consider using a personality test; these are generally very accurate. Here is one example; Caliper

References – Verify all references. Check social media like Facebook and LinkedIn for other possible references. This may also give you more information about the person.

Training – Provide all new employees with training on job functions, job requirements and safety procedures.

Probation Period – Some firms have a 90 day probation period that allows the freedom to end the relationship for any reason. This needs to be written in your employee handbook and job offer.

These ideas may not guarantee you will hire the best person, but it will increase the likelihood of finding the right person for your firm.
